The Methodology
What makes STRATUM different from other character development courses? +
STRATUM teaches you to excavate rather than fabricate character psychology. Instead of filling out worksheets or inventing traits, you discover the psychological architecture that already exists in your intuitive understanding of your character. Using AI as a Socratic coaching partner, you systematically uncover behavior patterns, driving beliefs, formative wounds, and the complete causal chain that makes your characters psychologically coherent.
I've tried character worksheets before. Why didn't they work? +
Traditional worksheets ask you to invent disconnected facts: favorite color, biggest fear, childhood memory. These details don't add up to a coherent psychology. STRATUM works differently — you start with one observable behavior, then excavate the hidden truth, the formative wound, and the lie your character believes. Each element causally connects to the next. The result isn't a collection of facts. It's an integrated psychological architecture.
Do I need to understand psychology to use this method? +
No. You need to understand human behavior as a storyteller, not as a therapist. STRATUM borrows concepts from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Schema Therapy, but only to enrich your storytelling. You're not diagnosing. You're discovering what your character would have to believe for their behavior to make sense.
The Course Structure
How long does the course take? +
Most writers will complete one lesson per week, finishing the full course in approximately two months. Each lesson includes video instruction, an AI coaching session (35–40 minutes), and workspace exercises. You work at your own pace.
Do I need to complete the course in order? +
Yes. The excavation methodology is deliberately sequential. Lesson 3 (The Formative Wound) requires the hidden truth you discovered in Lesson 2. Lesson 4 (The Lie) emerges from the wound in Lesson 3. Skipping ahead disrupts the causal chain that creates psychological coherence.
Can I use this method for multiple characters? +
Absolutely. You'll initially select one character — typically your protagonist — to excavate. Once you've mastered the method, you can repeat the process for antagonists, supporting characters, or multiple POV characters. Most writers find the second excavation goes significantly faster.
AI & Technology
How is this different from using AI to write my characters for me? +
STRATUM uses AI as a Socratic coaching partner, not a content generator. The AI asks questions. You provide the answers from your knowledge of your character. You're not accepting AI suggestions — you're using AI to help you access what you already intuitively know but haven't yet articulated. It strengthens your craft instead of replacing it.
What AI tools do I need? +
STRATUM is designed to work with Claude (by Anthropic), though the methodology adapts to other platforms. You can start with free-tier AI tools. Each lesson includes a pre-written coaching prompt — you copy it, paste it, and the session begins. No prompt engineering required.
Will It Work for Me?
Will this method work for my genre? +
Yes. The excavation methodology applies to any genre with psychologically complex characters — literary fiction, thriller, mystery, romance, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction. Whether your character wields a sword or works in corporate law, the underlying psychology functions the same way.
What if I've already written my first draft? +
Even better. You'll bring existing scenes and character choices into the excavation process, which often reveals patterns you've been writing intuitively. The course makes revision dramatically clearer — because you finally understand why your character does what they do.
I'm experienced but my characters still feel flat. Will this help? +
This is exactly who STRATUM serves. You know story structure. You understand plot mechanics. You can write clean prose. But your characters don't rival the psychological complexity you see in prestige television or literary fiction. STRATUM gives you the systematic process that traditional writing instruction skips.
